Read Me Dammit!

By Justin Bruner (aka FTG DEATH RHINO)

This “Read Me” will explain how to install Invidia Durandal 1.2, how to use Invidia Durandal 1.2, how Invidia Durandal 1.2 differs from Invidia Durandal 1.0, and how Invidia Durandal 1.2 was created. We Will go through each process in a step by step fashion.

How to Install

This section is only for beginners who are new to the Marathon Universe or the custom content universe. Invidia Durandal 1.2 comes to you via zipped folder (presumingly a .zip file) and has more files inside. Aleph One cannot trace files through a zipped folder, unless the folder is a plugin. So that means that we first must open the zipped folder and extract the files. I myself recommend WinRAR, But other extractors like WinZip will work too. Simply double-click the .zip file and the extractor should automatically open it. Don’t worry about an overdue trial of WinRAR, you can just click the exit icon in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window. So now you can visually see all of the items in the zip folder, but in this case, there is a File Folder entitled “Invidia Durandal 1.2” inside the “Invidia Durandal 1.2” .zip file. Hold down SDL_MOUSE1 over the File Folder and drag it out to the center of your desktop (hold over the WinRAR tab on the taskbar to minimize). So now we have the Folder on our desktop, so we can open it without an extractor. When you open the File Folder, you will find Invidia Durandal.sceA, Distant Swirls.mp3, and the document you are currently reading. The contents in the Folder should be like ¾ of a square “L” shape, so drag SDL_MOUSE1 from the top-left corner of the Folder window to the bottom-right corner of the folder window. Release SDL_MOUSE1 and right-click. Select “Copy” and open up your Marathon 2 or Marathon Infinity game folder. Right click a clearing in the folder window and select “Paste”. Reversing the process is quite difficult, or so it seems to write out.

How to use

This section is only for beginners who are new to the Marathon Universe or the custom content universe. Invidia Durandal 1.2 uses many different assets, such as MML and .SceA. Combined with MML scripts using Atque, Invidia Durandal is modified from a default map. It’s main modification is the duration of Extravision, reduced to 30 seconds from 3 minutes. Because you’ve completed installation, you are ready to head in-game. If you don’t know how to operate Marathon 2’s menu, you should refer to a manual. Select “Invidia Durandal(.sceA)” as your map file in the Preferences/Environment page. Then return to the main menu. You are ready to play on Invidia Durandal 1.2.

How 1.2 differs from 1.0

1.2 Features “Distant Swirls.mp3” while 1.2 featured “Rushing.mp3”. As Said earlier, MML wasn’t placed inside the map file until 1.2. 1.0’s Title page was the UESC Marathon logo while 1.2’s title page is The Rose. Other than that, the only difference between 1.0 and 1.2 is a digit.

How Invidia Durandal 1.2 was created

Invidia Durandal began as a side project of Envy Arena Platform, which to this day, is still in the beta release. Because of a sense of messiness, the Zeta release of EAP was deleted. When I began drawing Invidia Durandal, I had one thought: could it be compatible with Marathon 2 as well as XBLA HD textures? The Envy series was born ahead, in Marathon Infinity as late as 2013. I planned for this map to be the last Envy map ever. Had I known that the day before, Aleph One 1.1b was born, using .scen files that were the original Marathon files (I did plan to port Invidia Durandal to M1A1, but it seemed as if it was to sacrifice too much). When I was done in Weland, I headed over to Visual Mode 3.0 by treellama and realized that the heights were messed up. From that day forward, work began and went on 1.0. Just last night, I built a random algorithm AI that placed some extra items and monsters for me. It prevents symmetrical crowdedness that I was facing in the early item placing stage. Just today, while I was taking screenshots, I felt a sense that “Rushing” didn’t fit the mood, and I wanted something fresh, but related to Marathon. So I popped Swirls into Audacity and out came Distant Swirls.mp3. I opened up Atque, found a new title page, inserted the music, wrote the MML and merged it all up. Out came 1.2.
